Journalist Frank Sommerville from KTVU News did an incredible story on Tye McKinney last year. She's a local Bay Area woman who changed her life and now is encouraging others. Read her story and be encouraged to put your bravest foot forward in life.
This is Tye McKinney. Before and after.
I work out with her at God’s Gym in Oakland.
She’s gone from 180lbs to a totally cut 125lbs.
In fact, she just took first place in the Jr. Masters Figure at the Team USA Natural Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship in Las Vegas.
What she has done over the past few years is remarkable and it all started when she looked at some pictures of herself on her 33rd birthday:
“I didn't like the way I looked. I didn't realize I had picked up that much weight. I guess I was in denial until I saw those pictures. I (also) needed something to help me relax caring for my mother, who had been diagnosed with terminal Breast Cancer. I told myself then that I wanted to get healthy so that I could be proud of myself.”
So she changed her diet and started training.
I never knew her when she weighed 180lbs. And I actually didn’t believe her when she first told me.
“It was hard at first; I had to get myself into the right frame of mind. What kept me motivated was that each day I could see and feel the changes in my body and this made me want to push harder. In 4 months I was half way to my goal. It felt really good to wake up just feeling good from the inside out.”
After keeping the weight off for two years, Tye decided to start competing in bodybuilding.
She’s a single parent and takes her 9 year old daughter with her to the competitions. I’ve met her daughter. She’s adorable. She’s also very proud of what mom has done.
“When she (sees) me walk onto that stage I could hear her screaming, ‘There goes my mommy. I love you.’ My daughter being so proud of me just pushes me to strive harder and to better myself. I want to show her it doesn't matter what obstacle, age, or how hard the path is to get success, you can do it.”
Tye will be competing against women from all over the world in San Diego in the Natural Olympia on November 7-10 in San Diego.
Then next June she is set to compete in Slovakia.

To me Tye is proof once again that you can accomplish ANYTHING if you put your mind to it.
Now if I could just get my abs to look like hers.
